Nackawic \'Nack-ah-'whik\ n - Sulphur dioxide (SO2), esp. the odor, reminiscent of rotten eggs, produced by the St. Anne Nackawic Pulp & Paper Co. processing mill located near the town of Nackawic, just south of the Carleton County border; "The Nackawic is some strong this morning." Nackawic occurs when humid southerly winds channel the odour up the Saint John River valley and straight into the heart of Carleton County. Many County residents believe the smell of Nackawic to be a trustworthy harbinger of inclement weather. Many Countyers are employed by the mill, either directly or indirectly; these people often refer to Nackawic as "the smell of money." NEXT»
